In addition to its own alphabeth, Ethiopia has its own calendar. While the calendar is considered to be of the Ethiopian Orthodox church, Ethiopian new year is equally celebrated by all religions.

Some spend the new year eve in churches through unique prayers. Young girls equiped with home made drums move in groups of 5 or more rejoicing with new year's songs. Around 7 p.m local time, families torch bonfires in their homes. After it turns to ashes, family members jump over the bonfire. This tradition symbolizes as moving from one year to the next, leaving all misfortunes behind.

Special holliday Ethiopia foods like Doro wet ( sauce made of chickens) are cooked in every house. The aroma of the cooking holliday dishes, the bonfire smoke creating a fog like environment gives a unique flair to new year's eve.

As for the night streets and clubs will be packed by people singing and dancing.
