EPIPHANY

Known as Timket in Ethiopia, Epiphany is celebrated by Orthodox Christians all over the Ethiopia. This day, adopted as a national holliday in Ethiopia, is celebrated to mark the day Jesus Christ is baptized.

The Eve of Timket( called Ketera) is celebrated through a ceremony where Tabots( replicas of the ark of the convenant resting in every Orthodox Church ) will be taken out from their respective churches and accompanied by followers to a special place where they will convene. The streets will be decorated and closed for traffic as tens of thousands( some times hundreds of thousands) of followers will accompany the tabots to the place where they will spend this special night.

While many spend the whole night making their prayers infront of the Tabots, particularly the young, spend the eve meeting with each other and dancing.

The morning of Timket, after a religious prayer, holy water will be sprinkled on followers. Even those who spent the night at their place will go to this special occasion to take part in what they consider as blessing.

The Tabots will be accompanied back to their respective churches accompanied by their followers. The journey of the Tabots sometimes taking more than a few hours, will be made on foot. Throughout, the unique religious songs and dance by church choir and followers makes the journey most interesting.

Special Places to go to: If you are in Addis Ababa the best place to go to is Janmeda. ( As a tourist make sure you process a pass from the church through your agency so that you can get up close and take pictures)

However Epiphany is celebrated warmly in the historic city of Lalibela. We recommend that you make arrangements to attend this event there.

Exact date of Buhe in 2013: September 28
