UNIQUE ETHIOPIAN CULTURES AND COMMUNITIES

We are constantly building our exceptional Ethiopian communities and culture page as in truth every tribe and ethnic group in Ethiopia is unique. We have however prioritized those practices and communities that we see as exeptional. Lack of information on this subject has denied tourists to spend a few hours and, if time permits, a few days with communities that are unique and exeptional.

An example: many tourists who come to Ethiopia visit the city of Bahir dar, lake Tana, Tana monasteries, Abay fall and Fassil Castle which are relatively close to eachother in terms of proximity. Most however return without visiting the Awramba community because of lack of information. Why visit this particular community: because it is probably the only community in the world where communism is practiced in the pure sense of the term. There is no individual ownership, no leader, no specific job... everything is owned by the community and tasks are performed in rotation. The self sufficent Awrambas strive to create a unique generation: a simple act of lying results in being expulsed from the community. It is not only a socialist community: the Awramba strives to instill all positive virtues and completely expulse vices.

Like the Awrambas there are several other communities worth spending time on which will leave lasting memories on tourists who come to Ethiopia. Who knows: there are some communities who still resort to primitive ways of living but from whom we can learn a great deal.
