LAKE TURKANA

Lake Turkana is a lake which is little explored and visited by tourists. Yet it is the only lake in Ethiopia registered by UNESCO as World heritage site, although it is registered as Kenyan site. The reason for this is that several fossils have been found in the area dating several meleniums.

Other attributes that make the lake unique include the salty nature of the water. And yet the water is potable. For those who enjoy high temperatures Turkana is the place to go to. Indeed Turkana is the only lake found in a desert. Volcanic rocks that one can find in and around a lake give the area a different look. In addition the living volcano near the lake continuously puffs smoke.

Lake turkana is rich in terms of fish resource. Since it is located in a desert however snakes and scorpions could pose threat on visitors unless properly guided.

In 2012 the area near and around lake Turkana had major security problems mainly because of the Alshabab group in Somalia. This security problem has subsided following the joint efforts of both Kenyan and Ethiopian government joint efforts.
